Obama in F-Burg

Wow, I've been away from blogging for a while. Sort of took the summer off. Had lots to blog about but just let it slide. So I thought this would be a decent way to return and see if I can get into a writing groove.

This past Saturday Obama came to speak at UMW in Fredericksburg. 26,000 people showed up for an event that could handle about 12,000. Unfortunately, we were among the 14,000 that didn't get in. We stood in line for about 3-4 hours, a good portion of that in the rain. The line wove almost all the way around campus. Pretty crazy. We did get to stand outside the barrier and listen to the speeches at least. The feel of the event really was like a pep rally. This has just become the nature of politics unfortunately. More personal and ideological with less direct details about policy. But that is the hand we've been dealt. From this perspective, both Biden and Obama did a good job. Obama scored a lot of points for taking off his jacket and rolling up his sleeves once the rain started coming down again. Anything else would have fallen flat on a crowd that had stood in the rain all day. The most encouraging thing was the turnout. A real mix of race, class, and *age*. If a lot of people are motivated to get out and vote this time, maybe there is some hope. I'd love to see VA go blue this time around. Anyway, here's the video of Obama in F-burg:
